The estimated maize crop is 4,05% or 676 840 tons more than the 2025 crop. The three main maize producing areas, namely the Free State, Mpumalanga and North-West provinces are expected to produce 82% of the 2026 crop.

The production forecast of white maize is 9,488 million tons, which is 1,03% or 97 000 tons more than the 9,391 million tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for white maize is 1,675 million ha with an expected average yield of 5,67 t/ha.

The production forecast for yellow maize is 7,914 million tons, which is 0,73% or 57 800 tons less than the 7,972 million tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate is 1,050 million ha, with an expected average yield of 7,54 t/ha.

The area estimate for total maize was slightly increased to 2,724 million ha, which is 0,29% or 8 000 ha more than the 2,716 million ha estimated in February 2026. The adjustment to the area is based on additional information that became available from the analysis of satellite imagery. The analysis of satellite imagery forms part of the National Crop Estimates Consortium's project outputs, with the results becoming available during July/August.

Other summer crops

Sunflower seed: The production forecast for sunflower seed remained unchanged at 874 805 tons. The area estimate for sunflower seed is 570 100 ha, while the expected yield is 1,53 t/ha.

The production forecast for soybeans is 3,010 million tons, which is 1,11% or 33 650 tons less than the 3,044 million tons of the previous forecast. This is the largest soybean crop on record. The estimated area planted to soybeans is 1 212 700 ha, with an expected average yield of 2,48 t/ha.

The expected groundnut crop increased to 62 553 tons, representing an increase of 8,23% or 4 755 tons from the previous forecast of 57 798 tons. For groundnuts, the area estimate is 44 650 ha, with an expected yield of 1,40 t/ha.

The production forecast for sorghum is 138 248 tons, which is 3,71% or 5 330 tons less than the previous forecast of 143 578 tons. The area estimate for sorghum is 45 000 ha and the expected yield is 3,07 t/ha.

In the case of dry beans, the production forecast decreased slightly to 79 155 tons, representing a decrease of 1,03% or 820 tons from the previous forecast of 79 975 tons. The estimated area planted is 38 520 ha, with an expected yield of 2,05 t/ha.

Please note that the eighth production forecast for summer field crops for 2026 will be released on 29 September 2026.

Information is available online at the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development or SAGIS, as from 14:30 on the date of the relevant meeting of the Crop Estimates Committee.

Somergewasse – 2026

Ander somergewasse
