Summer field crops – 2026
Commercial maize
The size of the expected commercial maize crop has been set at 17,363 million tons, which is 0,63% or 108 100 tons more than the previous forecast of 17,255 million tons. This is the largest maize crop on record. The area estimate for total maize is 2,716 million ha while the expected average yield is 6,39 t/ha.
The estimated maize crop is 3,81% or 637 640 tons more than the 2025 crop. The three main maize producing areas, namely the Free State, Mpumalanga and North-West provinces are expected to produce 82% of the 2026 crop.
The production forecast of white maize is 9,391 million tons, which is 1,16% or 108 100 tons more than the 9,283 million tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for white maize is 1,665 million ha with an expected average yield of 5,64 t/ha.
The production forecast for yellow maize remained unchanged at 7,972 million tons. The area estimate is 1,052 million hectares, with an expected average yield of 7,58 t/ha.
Other summer crops
Sunflower seed: The production forecast for sunflower seed is 874 805 tons, which is 3,92% or 35 725 tons less than the previous forecast of 910 530 tons. The area estimate for sunflower seed is 570 100 ha, while the expected yield is 1,53 t/ha.
Other crops
The production forecast for soybeans remained unchanged at 3,044 million tons. This is the largest soybean crop on record. The estimated area planted to soybeans is 1 212 700 ha, with an expected average yield of 2,51 t/ha.
The expected groundnut crop also remained unchanged at 57 798 tons. For groundnuts, the area estimate is 44 650 ha, with an expected yield of 1,29 t/ha.
The production forecast for sorghum is 143 578 tons, which is 3,67% or 5 475 tons less than the previous forecast of 149 053 tons. The area estimate for sorghum is 45 000 ha and the expected yield is 3,19 t/ha.
In the case of dry beans, the production forecast decreased slightly to 79 975 tons, representing a decrease of 1,17% or 950 tons from the previous forecast of 80 925 tons. The estimated area planted is 38 920 ha, with an expected yield of 2,05 t/ha.

Somergewasse – 2026
Kommersiële mielies

Die geskatte mielie-oes is 3,81% of 637 640 ton meer as die 2025-oes. Die drie belangrikste mielieproduserende gebiede, naamlik die Vrystaat, Mpumalanga en Noordwes provinsies, gaan na verwagting 82% van die 2026-oes produseer.
Die produksieskatting van witmielies is 9,391 miljoen ton, wat 1,16% of 108 100 ton meer is as die 9,283 miljoen ton van die vorige skatting. Die oppervlakteskatting vir witmielies is 1,665 miljoen ha en die verwagte gemiddelde opbrengs is 5,64 t/ha.
Die produksieskatting vir geelmielies het onveranderd gebly op 7,972 miljoen ton. Die oppervlakteskatting is 1,052 miljoen hektaar, met 'n verwagte gemiddelde opbrengs van 7,58 t/ha.
Ander somergewasse
Sonneblomsaad: Die produksieskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 874 805 ton, wat 3,92% of 35 725 ton minder is as die vorige skatting van 910 530 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 570 100 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 1,53 t/ha is.
Ander gewasse
Die produksieskatting vir sojabone het onveranderd gebly op 3,044 miljoen ton. Dit is die grootste sojaboonoes wat nog aangeteken is. Die beraamde oppervlakte onder sojabone is 1 212 700 ha, met 'n verwagte gemiddelde opbrengs van 2,51 t/ha.
Die verwagte grondbone-oes is ook onveranderd gelaat op 57 798 tons. Vir grondbone is die oppervlakteskatting 44 650 ha, terwyl the verwagte opbrengs 1,29 t/ha is.
Die produksieskatting van sorghum is 143 578 ton, wat 3,67% of 5 475 ton minder is as die vorige skatting van 149 053 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sorghum is 45 000 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 3,19 t/ha.
Die produksieskatting vir droëbone het effens afgeneem na 79 975 ton, wat 1,17% of 950 ton laer is as die vorige skatting van 80 925 ton. Die beraamde oppervlakte onder droëbone is 38 920 ha, met 'n verwagte gemiddelde opbrengs van 2,05 t/ha.
Neem asseblief kennis dat die sewende produksieskatting vir somergewasse vir 2026, op 26 Augustus 2026 vrygestel sal word.

The area planted to maize in the non-commercial agricultural sector is estimated at 397 170 ha, which represents an increase of 10,94%, compared to the 358 000 ha of the previous season. The expected maize crop for this sector is 695 025 tons, which is 11,83% more than the 621 500 tons of last season. It is important to note that about 36,96% of the maize produced in the non-commercial sector, is planted in the Eastern Cape, followed by Limpopo with 31,00% and then KwaZulu-Natal with 21,90%.
Die voorlopige oppervlakte beplant met mielies in die nie-kommersiële landbou-sektor word geskat op 397 170 ha, wat 'n toename van 10,94% verteenwoordig in vergelyking met die 358 000 ha van die vorige seisoen. Preliminary area estimate for 2025 / Voorlopige oppervlakteskatting vir 2025
Winter cereal crops – 2026
The preliminary area estimate is based on the results of a non-probability survey conducted by the Directorate: Statistics and Economic Analysis of the Department of Agriculture and reflects the production situation as at mid-July 2026. The estimate also incorporates information provided by representatives of the Provincial Departments of Agriculture (PDAs).
Please note that the information from the Producer Independent Crop Estimation System (PICES), as conducted by the National Crop Statistics Consortium (NCSC), for the Western Cape will be available in August 2026 and for the Free State in September 2026.
Wheat
The preliminary area estimate for wheat is 473 900 ha, which is 8,39% or 43 400 ha less than the 517 300 ha planted for the previous season. This is the smallest area planted to wheat since 1929, when 439 000 ha were planted to wheat.
The estimated area planted in the Western Cape is 325 000 ha, which is 38 000 ha less than the 363 000 ha of the previous season. In the Free State, 56 000 ha is planted, which is 1 000 ha less than the 57 000 ha planted for the previous season. The area planted in the Northern Cape is 40 000 ha, which is the same than that of the previous season.
Other crops
The preliminary area estimate for barley is 104 820 ha, which is 8,12% or 7 870 ha more than the 96 950 ha of last season. The area planted to canola is 192 300 ha, which is 10,19% or 17 785 ha more than the 174 515 ha planted for the previous season. This is the largest area planted to canola on record.
The preliminary area estimate for oats for the 2026 season is 40 400 ha and for sweet lupins 23 000 ha.

Wintergewasse – 2026
Die voorlopige oppervlakteskatting is gebaseer op die resultate van 'n nie-waarskynlikheid steekproefopname wat deur die Direktoraat: Statistiek en Ekonomiese Analise van die Departement van Landbou uitgevoer is, en weerspieël die produksiesituasie soos teen middel Julie 2026. Die skatting sluit ook inligting in wat deur verteenwoordigers van die Provinsiale Departemente van Landbou (PDL's) verskaf is.

Koring
Die voorlopige skatting van die oppervlakte onder koring beloop 473 900 ha, wat 8,39% of 43 400 ha minder is as die 517 300 ha wat verlede seisoen aangeplant is. Dit is die laagste oppervlakte wat sedert 1929 met koring beplant is, toe die oppervlakte onder koring 439 000 ha beloop het.
Die beraamde oppervlakte beplant in die Wes-Kaap is 325 000 ha, wat 38 000 ha minder is as die 363 000 ha van die vorige seisoen. Vir die Vrystaat is die aanplantings 56 000 ha, wat 1 000 ha minder is as die 57 000 ha wat verlede seisoen aangeplant is. Die oppervlakte beplant in die Noord-Kaap is 40 000 ha, wat dieselfde is as wat verlede seisoen aangeplant is.
Ander gewasse
Die voorlopige oppervlakskatting vir gars is 104 820 ha, wat 8,12% of 7 870 ha meer is as die 96 950 ha van verlede seisoen. Die oppervlakte onder canola s 192 300 ha, wat 10,19% of 17 785 ha meer is as die 174 515 ha wat verlede seisoen aangeplant is. Dit is die grootste oppervlakte wat nog met canola beplant is.
Die voorlopige oppervlakteskatting vir hawer vir die 2026-seisoen is 40 400 ha en vir soetlupine 23 000 ha.
Neem asseblief kennis dat die hersiene oppervlakte beplant en eerste produksieskatting vir wintergewasse vir 2025 op 27 Augustus 2025 vrygestel sal word.
Inligting is beskikbaar aanlyn by die Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development of by SAGIS, vanaf 14:30 op die dag van die toepaslike vergadering van die Oesskattingskomitee.

- Personal items such as laptops, handbags, cell phones, etc. are not allowed in the venue during the meeting.

- No member is allowed to discuss crop estimates information with anyone other than a member of the Committee before the embargo time.
- Only the Chairperson, or a member appointed by the Chairperson, may release the figures to the media.
- Members must regard the detail of any information that was collected for and/or discussed during the meeting, as confidential.
- Individual information received for crop estimate purposes is treated strictly confidential, and is not divulged for any other purposes.
