Summer field crops – 2023
Commercial maize
The size of the expected commercial maize crop remained unchanged at 16,354 million tons. The area estimate for maize is 2,586 million ha and the expected yield is 6,32 t/ha.
The estimated maize crop is 5,71% or 884 100 tons larger than the 2022 crop. The three main maize producing areas, namely the Free State, Mpumalanga and North West provinces are expected to produce 83% of the 2023 crop.
The production forecast of white maize remained unchanged at 8,638 million tons. The area estimate for white maize is 1,521 million ha and the expected yield is 5,68 t/ha.
In the case of yellow maize, the production forecast remained unchanged at 7,716 million tons. The area estimate for yellow maize is 1,065 million ha and the yield is 7,25 t/ha.
Other summer crops
Sunflower seed: The production forecast for sunflower seed also remained unchanged at 758 610 tons. The area estimate for sunflower seed is 555 700 ha, while the expected yield is 1,37 t/ha.
Other crops
The production forecast for soybeans remained unchanged at 2,755 million tons. The estimated area planted to soybeans is 1,148 million ha and the expected yield is 2,40 t/ha.
The expected groundnut crop is 51 910 tons, which is 0,78% or 400 tons more than the 51 510 tons of the previous forecast. For groundnuts, the area estimate is 31 300 ha, with an expected yield of 1,66 t/ha.
The production forecast for sorghum is 100 525 tons, which is 3,22% or 3 345 tons less than the 103 870 tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for sorghum is 34 000 ha and the expected yield is 2,96 t/ha.
In the case of dry beans, the production forecast remained unchanged at 48 560 tons. The area estimate of dry beans is 36 650 ha, with an expected yield of 1,32 t/ha.
Please note that the seventh production forecast for summer field crops for 2023 will be released on 29 August 2023.

Kommersiële mielies

In die geval van geelmielies is die produksieskatting onveranderd gelaat op 7,716 miljoen ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir geelmielies is 1,065 miljoen ha en die opbrengs is 7,25 t/ha.
Ander somergewasse
Sonneblomsaad: Die produksieskatting vir sonneblomsaad is ook onveranderd gelaat op 758 610 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 555 700 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 1,37 t/ha is.
Ander gewasse
Die produksieskatting van sojabone is onveranderd gelaat op 2,755 miljoen ton. Die geskatte oppervlakte beplant met sojabone is 1,148 miljoen ha en die verwagte opbrengs is 2,40 t/ha.
Die verwagte grondbone-oes is 51 910 ton, wat 0,78% of 400 ton meer is as die 51 510 ton van die vorige skatting. Vir grondbone is die oppervlakteskatting 31 300 ha, terwyl the verwagte opbrengs 1,66 t/ha is.

The preliminary area planted to maize in the non-commercial agricultural sector is estimated at 358 620 ha, which represents a decrease of 5,33%, compared to the 378 800 ha of the previous season. The expected maize crop for this sector is 664 040 tons, which is 0,44% less than the 667 000 tons of last season. It is important to note that about 48% of the maize produced in the non-commercial sector, is planted in the Eastern Cape, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 21%.

Winter cereal crops – 2023
The preliminary area estimate is based on the results of a non-probability survey conducted by the Directorate: Statistics and Economic Analysis from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, and reflects the position as at the middle of July 2023, as well as inputs from the PDA representatives. Please note that the information from the Producer Independent Crop Estimation System (PICES), as conducted by the National Crop Statistics Consortium (NCSC), for the Western Cape will be available in August 2023 and for the Free State in September 2023.
Wheat
The preliminary area estimate for wheat is 532 300 ha, which is 6,09% or 34 500 ha less than the 566 800 ha planted for the previous season.
The estimated area planted in the Western Cape is 362 000 ha, which is 2 000 ha more than the 360 000 ha of the previous season. In the Free State, 71 000 ha is planted, which is 25 000 ha less than the 96 000 ha planted for the previous season. The area planted in the Northern Cape is 39 000 ha, which is 8 000 ha less than the previous season.
Other crops
The preliminary area estimate for barley is 109 600 ha, which is 8,51% or 8 600 ha more than the 101 000 ha of last season.
The area planted to canola is 128 100 ha, which is 3,72% or 4 590 ha more than the 123 510 ha planted for the previous season.
The preliminary area estimate for oats for the 2023 season is 26 000 ha and for sweet lupines 18 000 ha.
Please note that the revised area planted estimate and first production forecast for winter cereals for 2023 will be released on 29 August 2023.

Wintergewasse – 2023
Die voorlopige oppervlakteskatting is gebaseer op die resultate van 'n nie-ewekansige opname onderneem deur die Direktoraat: Statistiek en Ekonomiese Analise van die Departement van Landbou, Grondhervorming en Landelike Ontwikkeling, en weerspieël die situasie teen die middel van Julie 2023, sowel as insette van die PDL verteenwoordigers. - Personal items such as laptops, handbags, cell phones, etc. are not allowed in the venue during the meeting.
- No member is allowed to leave the meeting before 12:00 in order to prevent disclosure of the information.
- The embargo time for the release of crop estimates information is 14:30.
- No member is allowed to discuss crop estimates information with anyone other than a member of the Committee before the embargo time.
- Only the Chairperson, or a member appointed by the Chairperson, may release the figures to the media.
- Members must regard the detail of any information that was collected for and/or discussed during the meeting, as confidential.
- Individual information received for crop estimate purposes is treated strictly confidential, and is not divulged for any other purposes.
