Summer field crops – 2023
Commercial maize
The size of the expected commercial maize crop remained unchanged at 16,395 million tons. The area estimate for maize is 2,586 million ha and the expected yield is 6,34 t/ha.
The estimated maize crop is 5,98% or 925 225 tons larger than the 2022 crop. The three main maize producing areas, namely the Free State, Mpumalanga and North West provinces are expected to produce 83% of the 2023 crop.
The production estimate of white maize remained unchanged at 8,500 million tons. The area estimate for white maize is 1,521 million ha and the expected yield is 5,59 t/ha.
In the case of yellow maize, the production estimate also remained unchanged at 7,895 million tons. The area estimate for yellow maize is 1,065 million ha and the yield is 7,41 t/ha.
Other summer crops
Sunflower seed: The production estimate for sunflower seed decreased by 0,69% or 5 000 tons from 729 110 tons to 724 110 tons. The area estimate for sunflower seed is 555 700 ha, while the expected yield is 1,30 t/ha.
Other crops
The production estimate for soybeans remained unchanged at 2,755 million tons. The estimated area planted to soybeans is 1,148 million ha and the expected yield is 2,40 t/ha.
The expected groundnut crop is 52 660 tons, which is 1,44% or 750 tons more than the 51 910 of the previous estimate. For groundnuts, the area estimate is 31 300 ha, with an expected yield of 1,68 t/ha.
The production estimate for sorghum remained unchanged at 94 360 tons. The area estimate for sorghum is 34 000 ha and the expected yield is 2,78 t/ha.
In the case of dry beans, the production estimate remained unchanged at 50 260 tons. The area estimate of dry beans is 36 650 ha, with an expected yield of 1,37 t/ha.

Die produksieskatting van witmielies is onveranderd gelaat op 8,500 miljoen ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir witmielies is 1,521 miljoen ha en die verwagte opbrengs is 5,59 t/ha.
In die geval van geelmielies is die produksieskatting ook onveranderd gelaat op 7,895 miljoen ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir geelmielies is 1,065 miljoen ha en die opbrengs is 7,41 t/ha.
Ander somergewasse
Sonneblomsaad: Die produksieskatting vir sonneblomsaad het met 0,69% of 5 000 ton, van 729 110 ton na 724 110 ton, afgeneem. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 555 700 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 1,30 t/ha is.
Ander gewasse
Die produksieskatting van sojabone is onveranderd gelaat op 2,755 miljoen ton. Die geskatte oppervlakte beplant met sojabone is 1,148 miljoen ha en die verwagte opbrengs is 2,40 t/ha.
Die verwagte grondbone-oes is 52 660 ton, wat 1,44% of 750 ton meer is as die 51 910 ton van die vorige skatting. Vir grondbone is die oppervlakteskatting 31 300 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 1,68 t/ha is.
Die produksieskatting van sorghum is onveranderd gelaat op 94 360 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sorghum is 34 000 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 2,78 t/ha.
In die geval van droëbone is die oes onveranderd gelaat op 50 260 ton. Die oppervlakte beplant met droëbone is 36 650 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 1,37 t/ha.

The preliminary area planted to maize in the non-commercial agricultural sector is estimated at 358 620 ha, which represents a decrease of 5,33%, compared to the 378 800 ha of the previous season. The expected maize crop for this sector is 664 040 tons, which is 0,44% less than the 667 000 tons of last season. It is important to note that about 48% of the maize produced in the non-commercial sector, is planted in the Eastern Cape, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 21%.
Die voorlopige oppervlakte beplant met mielies in die nie-kommersiële landbou-sektor word geskat op 358 620 ha, wat 'n afname van 5,33% verteenwoordig in vergelyking met die 378 800 ha van die vorige seisoen. Winter cereal crops – 2023
Wheat
The expected production of wheat is 2,152 million tons, which is 0,70% or 15 200 tons less than the previous forecast of 2,167 million tons, whilst the expected yield is 4,00 t/ha.
The expected production in the Western Cape is 1,132 million tons (53%), which is 1,6% or 18 250 tons less than the previous forecast. In the Northern Cape, 310 000 tons (14%) is expected to be produced – unchanged from the previous month. In the Free State, the expected production is 309 600 tons (14%), which is unchanged from the previous month.
The area estimate for wheat is 537 950 ha, of which an estimated 365 000 ha or 68% is planted in the Western Cape, 72 000 ha or 13% in the Free State and 40 000 ha or 7% in the Northern Cape.
Other crops
The production forecast for barley is 360 220 tons, which is 5,24% or 19 900 tons less than the previous month's forecast of 380 120 tons.The area planted is estimated at 107 600 ha, while the expected yield is 3,35 t/ha.
The expected canola crop is 237 450 tons, which is unchanged from the previous month. The area estimate for canola is 131 200 ha, with an expected yield of 1,81 t/ha.
The expected crop for oats for the 2023 season is 36 200 tons and the area planted is 27 500 ha. The expected yield is 1,32 t/ha.
In the case of sweet lupines, the production forecast is 16 800 tons. The area estimate of sweet lupines is 16 000 ha, with an expected yield of 1,05 t/ha.

Koring

Die verwagte produksie in die Wes-Kaap is 1,132 miljoen ton (53%), wat 1,6% of 18 250 ton minder is as die vorige skatting. In die Noord-Kaap is die beraamde produksie 310 000 ton (14%) – onveranderd in vergelyking met die vorige maand. In die Vrystaat is die verwagte produksie 309 600 ton (14%), wat onveranderd is in vergelyking met die vorige maand.

Inligting is beskikbaar aanlyn by die Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development of by SAGIS, vanaf 14:30 op die dag van die toepaslike vergadering van die Oesskattingskomitee.
CONFIDENTIALITY ISSUES that CEC members are committed to adhere to on the day of the meeting
- Personal items such as laptops, handbags, cell phones, etc. are not allowed in the venue during the meeting.
- No member is allowed to leave the meeting before 12:00 in order to prevent disclosure of the information.
- The embargo time for the release of crop estimates information is 14:30.
- No member is allowed to discuss crop estimates information with anyone other than a member of the Committee before the embargo time.
- Only the Chairperson, or a member appointed by the Chairperson, may release the figures to the media.
- Members must regard the detail of any information that was collected for and/or discussed during the meeting, as confidential.
- Individual information received for crop estimate purposes is treated strictly confidential, and is not divulged for any other purposes.
