Summer field crops – 2022
Commercial maize
The size of the expected commercial maize crop has been set at 14,714 million tons. The area estimate for maize is 2,623 million ha, while the expected yield is 5,61 t/ha.
The estimated maize crop is 10% smaller than the 2021 crop. The three main maize producing areas, namely the Free State, Mpumalanga and North West provinces are expected to produce 82% of the 2022 crop.
The area estimate for white maize is 1,575 million ha and for yellow maize the area estimate is 1,048 million ha.
The production forecast for white maize remained unchanged at 7,470 million tons, whilst the yield for white maize is 4,74 t/ha. In the case of yellow maize the production forecast is 7,243 million tons, which is 0,49% or 35 000 tons more than the previous forecast of 7,208 million tons. The yield for yellow maize is 6,91 t/ha.
Sunflower seed: The production forecast for sunflower seed is 922 750 tons, which is 4,02% or 38 600 tons lower than the previous forecast of 961 350 tons. The area estimate for sunflower seed is 670 700 ha, while the expected yield is 1,38 t/ha.
Other crops
The production forecast for soybeans has been set at 2,151 million tons, which is 2,87% or 60 000 tons more than the previous forecast of 2,091 million tons. The estimated area planted to soybeans is 925 300 ha and the expected yield is 2,33 t/ha.
The expected groundnut crop was adjusted downwards by 10,75% or 5 900 tons, from 54 900 tons to 49 000 tons. For groundnuts, the area estimate is 43 400 ha, with an expected yield of 1,13 t/ha.
The production forecast for sorghum is 136 200 tons, which is 3,28% or 4 620 tons less than the previous forecast of 140 820 tons. The area estimate for sorghum is 37 200 ha and the expected yield is 3,66 t/ha.
In the case of dry beans, the production forecast was also adjusted downwards by 3,44% or 1 845 tons, from 53 565 tons to 51 720 ton. The area estimate of dry beans is 42 900 ha, with an expected yield of 1,21 t/ha.
Please note that the seventh production forecast for summer field crops for 2022 will be released on 30 August 2022.

Somergewasse – 2022
Kommersiële mielies
Die grootte van die verwagte kommersiële mielie-oes is 14,714 miljoen ton. Die skatting van die oppervlakte onder mielies is 2,623 miljoen ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 5,61 t/ha is.
Die geskatte mielie-oes is 10% kleiner as die 2021-oes. Die drie belangrikste mielieproduserende gebiede, naamlik die Vrystaat, Mpumalanga en Noordwes provinsies, gaan na verwagting 82% van die 2022-oes produseer.
Die oppervlak onder witmielies is 1,575 miljoen ha en vir geelmielies is die oppervlak 1,048 miljoen ha.
Die produksieskatting van witmielies is onveranderd gelaat op 7,470 miljoen ton, terwyl die opbrengs van witmielies 4,74 t/ha is. In die geval van geelmielies is die produksieskatting 7,243 miljoen ton, wat 0,49% of 35 000 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 7,208 miljoen ton. Die opbrengs van geelmielies is 6,91 t/ha.
Sonneblomsaad: Die produksieskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 922 750 ton, wat 4,02% of 38 600 ton minder is as die vorige skatting van 961 350 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 670 700 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 1,38 t/ha is.
Ander gewasse
Die produksieskatting van sojabone is op 2,151 miljoen ton gestel, wat 2,87% of 60 000 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 2,091 miljoen ton. Die geskatte oppervlakte beplant met sojabone is 925 300 ha en die verwagte opbrengs is 2,33 t/ha.
Die verwagte grondbone-oes is afwaarts aangepas met 10,75% of 5 900 ton, vanaf 54 900 ton na 49 000 ton. Vir grondbone is die oppervlakteskatting 43 400 ha, terwyl the verwagte opbrengs 1,13 t/ha is.
Die produksieskatting van sorghum is 136 200 ton, wat 3,28% of 4 620 ton minder is as die vorige skatting van 140 820 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sorghum is 37 200 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 3,66 t/ha.
In die geval van droëbone is die produksieskatting ook afwaarts aangepas met 3,44% of 1 845 ton, vanaf 53 565 ton tot 51 720 ton. Die oppervlakte beplant met droëbone is 42 900 ha en die verwagte opbrengs is 1,21 t/ha.
Neem asseblief kennis dat die sewende produksieskatting vir somergewasse vir 2022, op 30 Augustus 2022 vrygestel sal word.

The area planted to maize in the non-commercial agricultural sector is estimated at 378 800 ha, which represents an increase of 4,38%, compared to the 362 900 ha of the previous season. The expected maize crop for this sector is 667 000 tons, which is 4,80% more than the 636 440 tons of last season. It is important to note that about 47% of the maize produced in the non-commercial sector, is planted in the Eastern Cape, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 22%.
Die oppervlakte beplant met mielies in die nie-kommersiële landbou-sektor word geskat op 378 800 ha, wat 'n toename van 4,38% verteenwoordig in vergelyking met die 362 900 ha van die vorige seisoen. Winter cereal crops – 2022
The preliminary area estimate is based on the results of a non-probability survey conducted by the Directorate: Statistics and Economic Analysis from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, and reflects the position as at the middle of July 2022, as well as inputs from the PDA representatives. Please note that the information from the Producer Independent Crop Estimation System (PICES), as conducted by the National Crop Statistics Consortium (NCSC), for the Western Cape will be available in August 2022 and for the Free State in September 2022.
Wheat
The preliminary area estimate for wheat is 553 900 ha, which is 5,81% or 30 400 ha more than the 523 500 ha planted for the previous season.
The estimated area planted in the Western Cape is 360 000 ha, which is the same as the previous season's plantings. In the Free State, 95 000 ha is planted, which is 25 000 ha more than the 70 000 ha planted for the previous season. The area planted in the Northern Cape is 37 000 ha, which is 1 500 ha more than the previous season.
Other crops
The preliminary area estimate for barley is 106 600 ha, which is 12,53% or 11 870 ha more than the 94 730 ha of last season.
The area planted to canola is 121 200 ha, which is 21,20% or 21 200 ha more than the 100 000 ha planted for the previous season.
The preliminary area estimate for oats for the 2022 season is 30 150 ha and for sweet lupines 30 000 ha.
Please note that the revised area planted estimate and first production forecast for winter cereals for 2022 will be released on 30 August 2022.

Wintergewasse – 2022
Die voorlopige oppervlakteskatting is gebaseer op die resultate van 'n nie-ewekansige opname onderneem deur die Direktoraat: Statistiek en Ekonomiese Analise van die Departement van Landbou, Grondhervorming en Landelike Ontwikkeling, en weerspieël die situasie teen die middel van Julie 2022, sowel as insette van die PDL verteenwoordigers. Koring
Die voorlopige skatting van die oppervlakte onder koring beloop 553 900 ha, wat 5,81% of 30 400 ha meer is as die 523 500 ha wat verlede seisoen aangeplant is.
Die beraamde oppervlakte beplant in die Wes-Kaap is 360 000 ha, wat dieselfde is as die vorige seisoen se aanplantings. Vir die Vrystaat is die aanplantings 95 000 ha, wat 25 000 ha meer is as die 70 000 ha wat verlede seisoen aangeplant is. Die oppervlakte beplant in die Noord-Kaap is 37 000 ha, wat 1 500 ha meer is as die vorige seisoen.
Ander gewasse
