Area estimate and sixth production forecast (2020) Oppervlakte- en sesde produksieskatting
Summer field crops – 2020
Commercial maize: The size of the expected commercial maize crop has been set at 15,545 million tons, which is 0,20% or 31 300 tons more than the previous forecast of 15,514 million tons. The area estimate for maize is 2,611 million ha, while the expected yield is 5,95 t/ha.
The estimated maize crop is 38% bigger than the 2019 crop. The three main maize producing areas, namely the Free State, Mpumalanga and North West provinces are expected to produce 84% of the 2020 crop.
The area estimate for white maize is 1,616 million ha and for yellow maize the area estimate is 994 500 ha.
The production forecast of white maize is 9,106 million tons, which is 0,34% or 31 300 tons more than the 9,075 million tons of the previous forecast. The yield for white maize is 5,63 t/ha. In the case of yellow maize the production forecast remained unchanged at 6,439 million tons. The yield for yellow maize is 6,47 t/ha.
Sunflower seed: The production forecast for sunflower seed is 765 960 tons, unchanged from the previous forecast. The area estimate for sunflower seed is 500 300 ha, while the expected yield is 1,53 t/ha.
Other crops
The production forecast for soybeans remained unchanged at 1,261 million tons. The estimated area planted to soybeans is 705 000 ha and the expected yield is 1,79 t/ha.
The expected groundnut crop remained unchanged at 52 140 tons. The area estimate is 37 500 ha, with an expected yield of 1,39 t/ha.
The production forecast for sorghum is 135 260 tons, which is 1,20% or 1 600 tons more than the 133 660 tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for sorghum is 42 500 ha and the expected yield is 3,18 t/ha.
In the case of dry beans, the production forecast is 64 800, which is 5,90% or 4 060 tons less than the previous forecast. The area estimate of dry beans is 50 150 ha, with an expected yield of 1,29 t/ha.

Somergewasse – 2020
Kommersiële mielies: Die grootte van die verwagte kommersiële mielie-oes is op 15,545 miljoen ton gestel, wat 0,20% of 31 300 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 15,514 miljoen ton. Die skatting van die oppervlakte onder mielies is 2,611 miljoen ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 5,95 t/ha is.
Die geskatte mielie-oes is 38% groter as die 2019-oes. Die drie belangrikste mielieproduserende gebiede, naamlik die Vrystaat, Mpumalanga en Noordwes provinsies, gaan na verwagting 84% van die 2020-oes produseer.
Die oppervlak onder witmielies is 1,616 miljoen ha en vir geelmielies is die oppervlak 994 500 ha.
Die produksieskatting van witmielies is is 9,106 miljoen ton, wat 0,34% of 31 300 ton meer is as die ton 9,075 miljoen ton van die vorige skatting. Die opbrengs van geelmielies is 5,63 t/ha. In die geval van geelmielies is die produksieskatting onveranderd gelaat op 6,439 miljoen ton. Die opbrengs van geelmielies is 6,47 t/ha.
Sonneblomsaad: Die produksieskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 765 960 ton, onveranderd teenoor die vorige skatting. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 500 300 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 1,53 t/ha is.
Ander gewasse
Die produksieskatting van sojabone is onveranderd gelaat op 1,261 miljoen ton. Die geskatte oppervlakte beplant van sojabone is 705 000 ha en die verwagte opbrengs is 1,79 t/ha.
Die verwagte grondbone-oes is onveranderd gelaat op 52 140 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting is 37 500 ha, terwyl the verwagte opbrengs 1,39 t/ha is.
Die produksieskatting van sorghum is 135 260 ton, wat 1,20% of 1 600 ton meer is as die 133 660 ton van die vorige skatting. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sorghum is 42 500 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 3,18 t/ha.

The preliminary area planted to maize in the non-commercial agricultural sector is estimated at 297 460 ha, which represents a slight increase of 0,49%, compared to the 296 000 ha of the previous season. The expected maize crop for this sector is 543 545 tons, which is 1,03% less than the 549 180 tons of last season. It is important to note that about 40% of the maize produced in the non-commercial sector, is planted in the Eastern Cape, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 27%.
Die voorlopige oppervlakte beplant met mielies in die nie-kommersiële landbou-sektor word geskat op 297 460 ha, wat 'n effense toename van 0,49 % verteenwoordig in vergelyking met die 296 000 ha van die vorige seisoen. Winter cereal crops – 2020
The preliminary area estimate is based on the results of a non-probability survey conducted by the Directorate: Statistics and Economic Analysis from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, and reflects the position as at the middle of July 2020, as well as inputs from the PDA representatives. Please note that the information from the Producer Independent Crop Estimation System (PICES), as conducted by the National Crop Statistics Consortium (NCSC), for the Western Cape will be available in August 2020 and for the Free State in September 2020.
Wheat
The preliminary area estimate for wheat is 517 000 ha, which is 4,26% or 23 000 ha less than the 540 000 ha planted for the previous season.
An estimated 326 000 ha is planted in the Western Cape, which is 1 000 ha more than the 325 000 ha planted for the previous season. In the Free State, 105 000 ha is planted, which is 23 000 ha less than the 128 000 ha planted for the previous season. The area planted in the Northern Cape is 35 500 ha, which is 2 000 ha less than the previous season.
Other crops
The preliminary area estimate for malting barley is 132 760 ha, which is 0,61% or 800 ha more than the 131 960 ha of last season.
The area planted to canola is 71 120 ha, which is 3,89% or 2 880 ha less than the 74 000 ha planted for the previous season.
The preliminary area estimate for oats for the 2020 season is 23 000 ha.

Wintergewasse – 2020
Die voorlopige oppervlakteskatting is gebaseer op die resultate van 'n nie-ewekansige opname onderneem deur die Direktoraat: Statistiek en Ekonomiese Analise van die Departement van Landbou, Grondhervorming en Landelike Ontwikkeling, en weerspieël die situasie teen die middel van Julie 2020, sowel as insette van die PDL verteenwoordigers. Koring

Die beraamde oppervlakte beplant in die Wes-Kaap is 326 000 ha, wat 1 000 ha meer is as die 325 000 ha wat verlede seisoen aangeplant is. Vir die Vrystaat is die aanplantings 105 000 ha, wat 23 000 ha minder is as die 128 000 ha wat verlede seisoen aangeplant is. Die oppervlakte beplant in die Noord-Kaap is 35 500 ha, wat 2 000 ha minder is as die vorige seisoen.
Ander gewasse
Die voorlopige oppervlakskatting vir moutgars is 132 760 ha, wat 0,61% of 800 ha meer is as die 131 960 ha van verlede seisoen.
Die oppervlakte onder canola is 71 120 ha, wat 3,89% of 2 880 ha minder is as die 74 000 ha wat verlede seisoen aangeplant is.
